In 2008, we launched our first special needs population project with the Lighthouse for the Blind in Fort Lauderdale. Each class accommodates approximately a dozen blind students of all ages. By the end of our first year, we produced a tailor-made yoga CD for the student’s self-practice at home.
Our
Classes
Classes for the Yoga for the Blind are led by two yoga teachers, in collaboration with a group of loyal volunteers (yoga students and teachers themselves) who work one-on-one with each student to guide them in transitioning between poses, modifying asanas according to their level of practice, and providing guidance for correct alignment. During each 90-minute session, the students practice meditation and Pranayama (breath control), and flow between seated poses, standing balances, hip openers and backbends, finishing with a deep restful Savasana (relaxation).
